MI Right to Vote Blog: Post 2: Compare and Contrast

There has been some media coverage of another “right to vote” proposal from Promote the Vote with support from Voters Not Politicians. We have completed a compare and contrast of our MI Right to Vote Proposal to theirs. We will be posting the many differences on the blog, Facebook and getting our message out in the media. There is a lot to unpack. We will be presenting it in sections.

With that said, no one else other than us is putting forward a proposal for Ballot Initiative Reform to stop the loophole that allows a ballot initiative to be passed by the legislature to bypass the Governor veto and a vote of the Michigan Voters.

It’s this loophole that has been allowed to stand for far to too long.  It allows groups like Secure MI Vote to gather signatures for a ballot initiative to only need 8% of registered voters to sign in order for it to be taken up and passed by the Michigan state legislature. Under current law this would be veto-proof, evading the typical democratic process. Most of their current proposal has already been passed by the legislature and vetoed by the Governor. Proposals like Secure MI Vote’s are not intended to go on the ballot because they would never win at the ballot box by a majority of Michigan voters.
